Melbourne Centre for International Business

Internationalisation Project

The Australian Centre for International Business has commenced a wide-ranging research program to document and interpret the experiences of Australian firms doing business offshore.

It is of great importance to the future of Australia that domestic-based firms develop viable offshore operations. There have been notable successes, but media reporting has highlighted the problems faced by well-known firms that have destroyed shareholder value through poorly conceived international strategies.

The research being undertaken by the Centre takes a long-term and analytic approach. It draws on the extensive theoretical literature in international business and strategy and compares the experiences of Australian firms with those from other comparable economies.

Members of the Centre are working on various aspects of the internationalization experience. These include the relationship between the scale and nature of the markets in which firms operate in Australia and their ability to succeed overseas; their ability to learn about overseas markets through a various types of engagement such as exporting, licensing, alliances and becoming multinational; a lack of understanding of the markets and regulatory regimes operating in foreign countries; and difficulties in cross cultural management.
