Professorial Fellow Howard Dick launches corruption report

29 September, 2009
On Thursday 24 September Professorial Fellow Howard Dick launched Transparency International's Global Corruption Report 2009: ‘Corruption and the Private Sector’.  The report was launched at a combined lunchtime function of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (Vic) and CEDA (Committee for the Economic Development of Australia). Transparency International is the international anti-corruption NGO/watchdog. The Report and its statistical rankings of the performance of every country is annual but this year's focus on the private sector is a new approach. Professor Dick summarised the report’s essential message as “that ethics must be part of a company’s mission and business strategy from board level down. Dick believes that ethics must be tied directly to decision-making and reporting lines, ethical thinking and behaviour must be embedded in a firm’s corporate culture and corporate culture must be consistent with individual and social conscience. The launch of the report was covered by both The Age and West Australian newspapers, see it in Media Mentions.

International business luminaries advance debate on emerging economies

28 September, 2009
On 24 and 25 September 2009 the Melbourne Centre for International Business hosted a two-day workshop on the topic of "Multinational companies from emerging economies".

Economically successful emerging markets are mainly thought of as destinations for foreign direct investment (FDI), chiefly from developed nations. While such inflows of  investment (as well as corresponding inflows of technology and knowledge) played a major role in the economic development of many emerging nations, more recently these inflows have been complemented with FDI outflows. The last decade witnessed a rapid acceleration in outward flows of FDI from emerging economies such as China, India and Brazil. As a result, companies from these and other emerging economies have joined the ranks of the world’s largest multinational enterprises. The extent and pace of this phenomenon have fascinated and perplexed scholars in international business. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together a number of Australian (and overseas) academics to advance sholarship in this field and to map out a future research agenda. Some of the themes discussed include the interplay of firm strategy, government policy and the globalising world economy; as well as the role played by mergers and acquisitions in the rapid rise of emerging market multinationals. The workshop's keynote addresses were delivered by Professor John Mathews and Professor Anoop Madhok. The meeting was attended by participants from York University (Canada), University of Sydney, University of NSW, Macquarie University, University of SA, ANU, Monash University, RMIT, Melbourne Business School and the University of Melbourne. Marketing students give exemplary performance

10 June, 2009
For the second year in a row, marketing students have participated in the Consumer Behaviour Case Competition with one of the world's largest companies, Procter & Gamble (P&G). Dr Elison Lim from the Department of Management & Marketing, who designed and coordinated the Case Competition, said, "It was fulfilling to know that students enjoyed the Case Competition and that they developed a deeper grasp of the subject through participating in it. I believe that the students have gained a level of confidence and experience that prepares them well ahead of their counterparts as a result of participating in this case project."

Throughout the semester, the students of the undergraduate and graduate Consumer Behaviour subjects worked on a real life case study developed by Dr. Lim in collaboration with P&G. Their task was to reinvigorate two of P&G’s deodorant brands. Three UG teams and three PG teams were selected to present their recommendations to a judging panel from P&G and the Faculty in the Case Competition Finals on Saturday 30 May.

The winners were: Jessica Nia, Christopher Backman and Nisha Karna from the undergraduate class, and Alexander Lloyd, Levent Akbas, Neville Unvalla, Ardhana Rai and Filippo Baschera from the postgraduate class.

Mr. Richard Kenner, Associate Consumer & Marketing Knowledge Manager for P&G, commented on the students' accomplishments: "The standard of presentations from the finalists this year was exemplary and exceeded expectations. Congratulations to all students involved and especially the finalists for putting together such polished and consumer lead presentations. Award for Teaching Innovation for Management and Marketing's winning team

24 April, 2009
Leisa Sargent, Belinda Allen, Cynthia Hardy and Jennifer Frahm from the Department of Management and Marketing have been awarded this year's Dean’s Award for Teaching Innovation as a Team Award. This team has developed a program to build the capacity of tutors in the undergraduate subject Organisational Behaviour to work with students to enhance their team-based learning skills. The training program is predicated on the belief that tutors play a pivotal role in helping students develop these important teamwork skills.

Using an experimental control group, the team evaluated the effectiveness of the training program from the perspective of the students. The findings reveal that the training of tutors motivated and inspired students to learn as a result of greater team functioning and productivity. The rigour of this study has resulted in a forthcoming publication in the Journal of Management Education.
