History
The Department of Management and Marketing was formed in January 1998 and was initially known as The Department of Management. The new department was formed from a merger between the Department of Management and Industrial Relations and the Department of Business Development and Corporate History. Professor Cynthia Hardy was recruited from the Faculty of Management at McGill University, Montreal to assume the role of the first Head of the newly formed department.
The new Department of Management was originally organised into five disciplinary areas representing its key research strengths; Human Resource Management, International Management, Marketing Management, Operations Management, and Organisation Studies. New staff members were hired into all disciplinary areas and new Management and Marketing undergraduate subjects were offered both as electives and as part of a new major in management – the Bachelor of Commerce (Management). New research centres were also set up – the Centre for Human Resource Management, the Australian Centre for International Business (now the Melbourne Centre for International Business), the Foundation for Sustainable Economic Development and the International Centre for Research in Organizational Discourse, Strategy and Change.
The Department continued to grow as a result of increasing enrolments, staff numbers, and the doctoral program. In 2002, the Department of Management offered a new Masters degree in Human Resource Management to complement the existing Masters of International Business and offered a range of specialisations as part of the Masters of Applied Commerce.
In May 2006 the department's name was changed to Department of Management and Marketing in recognition of the growth of the Marketing discipline. Based on the department’s research, we now have four discipline areas in Management: Human Resource Management, International Business, Operations Management and Organisation Studies; and two discipline areas in Marketing: Marketing Management and Consumer Behaviour.
