Research Interests

In one stream of research, Adam investigates the role of employee’s moods/emotions and affective personality in creating and maintaining employee attitudes and behaviour. A second stream of his research examines the causes and consequences of prejudice, discrimination, and mistreatment in the workplace. Adam's third program of research investigates the role of individual and contextual antecedents in ethical decision making and behaviour in organizations. Finally, his research relates broadly to the methods through which knowledge is accumulated and expressed in the social sciences through work on statistical and philosophical approaches to understanding data.

Adam has previously collected large scale survey data on stress responses from over 4000 managers, safety training data from nuclear waste disposal sites in the Northwestern USA, and data on interpersonal mistreatment among engineers responsible for building the Space Shuttle. Adam is currently collecting information on the methods and effectiveness of Business Ethics training and Risk Management programs in Australia. In a separate project, Adam is investigating how individuals are influenced in their current job from events in their prior job.

Teaching Philosophy

Adam's basic approach to teaching is modeled after some of the great teachers that he encountered in his educational experience, which emphasized both the development of fundamental critical thinking skills as well as the application knowledge and academic rigor to one's own work life. He strives to help students apply a scientific lens to understanding management practices in organizations by challanging them to critically evaluate and reflect on the information they are presented and the knowledge they already possess.
